Custom Fit Kneepads

ProKnee · United States

Full-length kneepads that move kneeling weight onto the shins, sized to each worker's leg measurements.

ProKnee Model 0714 Standard kneepads, one lying on its side and one standing upright, on a plain background
Model 0714 Standard. The white rubber boot and grey cushion take the knee; the black ribbed frame runs down the shin.Photo: ProKnee

ProKnee's 0714 (standard) and 0714E (wide) are full-length kneepads, made in Maine, USA, for floor layers and other trades who kneel all day. A ribbed frame reaching from the knee to the boot spreads body weight along the shin rather than onto the kneecap, and the straps sit well below the knee joint. Each pair is picked from 18 lengths, two knee-seat widths and two cushion thicknesses; every part is replaceable.

Reduces

Direct pressure on the knees during long periods of kneeling

Suitable for

Heavy, all-day kneeling (maker's rating). Its listed uses: carpet and hard-surface flooring (VCT, ceramics, hardwood, laminate, epoxy), concrete finishing, carpentry, roofing with approved safety tie-off devices, HVAC, automotive, airline work and ironwork.

Not suitable for

The maker names no unsuitable sites. Its conditions: roofing only with approved safety tie-off devices; a high instep or tall boots can throw off the sizing; keeping the non-marking rubber boot clean is the wearer's responsibility.

The maker's warnings (8)

01 · How it works

How the shin frame takes weight off the kneecap

Rather than a pad strapped over the knee, the 0714 is a frame running from the knee to the top of the boot, so kneeling weight is spread along the shin.

Because the frame runs the length of the shin, kneeling weight is spread from the knee seat to the lower end of the frame, and the centre of balance falls at mid-shin rather than directly on the knees. The maker says this reduces pressure on the knee and makes the wearer kneel with proper technique. A pocket-shaped knee seat holds the joint, and the front of the seat is angled up so that moving on the knees feels more natural.

  • Top strap about 4 in (10 cm) below the knee joint
  • Anti-twist cuff wraps 9 in (23 cm) of the lower leg
  • Front of the knee seat angled up 10.5° (toe spring)
  • Ribbed frame moulded from fibreglass-reinforced plastic resin

02 · Sizing

Measure, choose a cushion, check the fit

Each pair is chosen from the wearer's own measurements, so the maker asks for two measurements and a cushion choice. Its distributors can also take the measurements.

  1. Measuring guide: A–B from the floor to the top of the kneecap and C around the widest part of the calf, with correct and incorrect examples
    01

Take off your shoes and stand straight

Measure in socks, standing upright. Do not take an inch or two off to allow for shoes or boots; the maker says that gives the wrong size.

  2. Measuring guide: A–B from the floor to the top of the kneecap and C around the widest part of the calf, with correct and incorrect examples
    02

Measure A–B: floor to top of kneecap

Measure from the floor (A) to the top of the kneecap (B) and round down to the nearest half inch, so 21¾ in becomes 21.5 in. This picks one of the 18 frame lengths.

  3. Measuring guide: A–B from the floor to the top of the kneecap and C around the widest part of the calf, with correct and incorrect examples
    03

Measure C: widest part of the calf

With work trousers on, measure around the widest part of the calf and round up to the nearest half inch. Up to 17 in (43.2 cm) takes the standard 0714; 17.5 in (44.5 cm) or more takes the wide 0714E.

  4. Standard and wide knee seats fitted with 5/8 in and 1 in cushions, side by side
    04

    Choose the cushion thickness

1 in (25 mm) is recommended for 8 or more hours a day on the knees, past knee problems or surgery, or body weight over 200 lb (91 kg). 5/8 in (16 mm) suits 120–160 lb (54–73 kg) and gives a deeper knee cup.

  5. 05

Check the fit before the first job

Standing, push the pads down onto the shoes: the top should be within ¼ in (6 mm) of the top of the kneecap. Kneeling, the knee should sit snugly in the cup, with the thigh flush with the cushion's front edge.

06 · FAQ

Wearing in, rebuilds and care

How long does it take to get used to them?

Between one day and one week, depending on how much they are worn and for what kind of work.

From the maker's site
Can carpet fitters wear them with a knee kicker?

Yes. The maker says about half of its carpet-installer customers use them with a knee kicker.

From the maker's site
Are the cushions latex-free?

Yes. The cushion inserts are urethane foam, which the maker states is latex-free.

From the maker's site
Can the cushion thickness be changed later?

Yes. With a complete rebuild kit or a factory rebuild, either thickness can be ordered, whatever the pads came with. Cushions are size-specific, so the AB size and the model (standard or wide) are needed.

From the maker's site
How long does a factory rebuild take?

Usually 3–6 business days once the pads reach the repair department, plus shipping each way, which the maker puts at 2–10 business days within the US and Canada. Factory rebuilds are bought through a distributor.

From the maker's site
How should the kneepads be cleaned?

Unscrew the rubber boot, take the liner off its hook-and-loop strip and hand-wash it with dish or hand soap. The cushion is scrubbed and rinsed while still tied to the frame; water does not harm it, and damp pads can be used. Scrape residue off the boot, then wipe it with Clorox wipes or charcoal lighter fluid.
