The StaCool Industrial Vest is a passive cooling vest for hot work, including wear under protective clothing such as hazmat suits. Its DuPont Cordura shell holds six ThermoPaks (gel packs activated with water, then frozen), three at the front and three at the back, and a second set comes with it for swapping. The maker gives up to 3 hours of cooling per set, depending on heat and workload.

Suitable for

Construction, factory, refinery and utility work in high heat; hazmat, fire and military teams, including wear under protective clothing such as hazmat suits (Level A included)

Not suitable for

Work that requires flame-resistant (FR) certified clothing, such as flash-fire or electric-arc exposure: this vest is not flame-resistant. The maker sells separate FR vests, which it describes as NFPA 2112 certified and NFPA 70E compliant; they are not covered on this page.

The maker's warnings (5)

01 · Design

Six packs in an adjustable Cordura shell

The same ThermoPak cooling as the maker's other vests, in a heavier outer shell made to fit most wearers.

  • Three packs in front, three at the back

Six ThermoPaks sit in pockets across the chest and back. With hydrated packs the vest weighs 6–6.5 lb (about 2.7–2.9 kg), spread evenly around the torso (maker's figures).

  • A second set for swapping

Every vest comes with two sets of six packs, so one set can be freezing while the other is worn. Spare sets of six are sold separately.

  • Cordura shell, thin breathable lining

The outer shell is DuPont Cordura nylon, chosen for durability and easy care. The inner fabric is thin and highly breathable, and the maker says a thermal barrier sits between the packs and the body.

  • One size, three adjustment points

Velcro straps at the shoulders and sides adjust the fit at the shoulders, chest and stomach, which the maker says makes the vest easy to share between workers.

  • Over clothing, under protective suits

The maker's instructions say industrial models are worn over clothing. It also describes the vest as comfortable under protective clothing such as hazmat suits, including Level A.

  • Non-flammable packs; FR versions separate

The maker describes the pack gel as non-toxic and non-flammable. The vest fabric carries no flame-resistance claim; flame-resistant (FR) versions are sold as separate products.

02 · How to use

From dry packs to a cooled shift

The maker's instructions in four steps. Hydrated packs need eight hours in a freezer, so they are prepared well before the shift.

  1. Several hydrated ThermoPaks printed with the StaCool Vest logo, laid out on a white background
    01

    Hydrate the packs

ThermoPaks arrive dry and are activated with water: either a quick washing-machine cycle or a soak in warm water.

  2. 02

    Freeze for eight hours

Freeze the hydrated packs for 8 hours. The maker says they stay flexible when frozen and, frozen at lower temperatures, stay cold for longer.

  3. StaCool Industrial Vest in blue Cordura nylon, front view, with a green StaCool Vest logo on the chest and two black straps across the chest and stomach
    03

Load the vest and put it on

Slide three packs into the front pockets and three into the back, put the vest on over clothing and fasten the Velcro straps at the shoulders and sides.

  4. 04

Swap sets as the packs warm

One set cools for up to 3 hours, depending on heat and workload (maker's figure). Change to the second set and put the warm one back in the freezer; the maker suggests keeping spares in a cooler.

03 · ThermoPaks

What is inside a ThermoPak

Each ThermoPak is a flexible sheet of small sealed cells filled with a non-toxic polymer. The cells work independently, so if one is damaged or used up, the others keep cooling. The maker says an insulating layer between the packs and the skin spreads the cold evenly and avoids cold spots, and that the packs stay dry in use.

  • Stays flexible when frozen
  • Non-toxic and non-flammable; the maker says FDA-approved and food-safe
  • Reusable; a spare set of six for industrial vests is USD 45 on the US store

06 · Cautions

Limits and conditions the maker sets out

Short quotes from the maker's website, with our summary of each.

Our summary, then the maker's own words

  • The standard Industrial Vest makes no flame-resistance claim. For work that requires flame-resistant clothing, such as flash fire or electric arc exposure, the maker points to its separate FR vests.

In the maker's words: The FR vests are for environments requiring fire retardant certification. stacoolvest.com

  • The maker's how-to says industrial models are worn over clothing, while the Under Vest is worn under it. It publishes no separate warning about frozen packs touching bare skin.

In the maker's words: Put on your StaCool vest over (if industrial model) or under (if under vest model) clothing. stacoolvest.com

  • Cooling time is not fixed: up to 3 hours per set, depending on air temperature and workload. Longer shifts need planned pack changes and frozen spares.

In the maker's words: Each set of ThermoPaks provides up to 3 hours of cooling depending on ambient temperature and activity level. stacoolvest.com

  • Hydrated packs need 8 hours in a freezer for full effect. With two sets (12 packs) per wearer, freezer space and timing have to be arranged in advance.

In the maker's words: Freeze the hydrated packs for 8 hours for maximum effectiveness. stacoolvest.com

  • On the maker's US store, vests can be returned within 30 days only if unworn and unwashed, and hydrated ThermoPaks are not accepted back. Trying a vest with activated packs therefore rules out a return.

In the maker's words: Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on worn, hydrated, or used items, sale items or gift cards. stacoolvest.com

07 · FAQ

Questions answered on the maker's site

How long does one set of packs keep cooling?

Up to 3 hours, depending on the air temperature and how hard the wearer is working (maker's figure). Each vest comes with two sets, so the wearer can swap to the second set and carry on.

From the maker's site
How are the ThermoPaks prepared?

Put them through a quick washing-machine cycle or soak them in warm water to hydrate them, then freeze them for 8 hours. The maker says no other setup is needed.

From the maker's site
Is the gel inside the packs safe?

The maker says the gel is non-toxic and non-flammable, FDA-approved and food-safe, and safe for children and medical users.

From the maker's site
Will the packs feel too cold against the body?

The maker's FAQ says all StaCool vests fit closely and have a thermal barrier between the ThermoPaks and the skin, for comfortable, stable cooling.

From the maker's site
Can it be ordered from outside the United States?

The maker says it can ship to almost any address and will arrange orders outside the US, but these cannot be placed through the online store: buyers are asked to phone or email. Some products have shipping restrictions.

From the maker's site
How should the vest be cleaned?

The maker calls the Cordura shell easy to care for but publishes no washing instructions for the Industrial Vest. Its FAQ advice to hand-wash in mild detergent and warm water and hang to dry is written for the Under Vest.
