Reduces

Heat strain during shifts in hot plants and on construction sites

Suitable for

Industrial and construction work in heat; the maker names steel mills, construction crews and plants without air conditioning. Spare packs can be kept in a cooler on site and swapped during the shift. The maker suggests its Cool58 packs, which recharge in ice water, for indoor work, clean rooms and jobs where moisture control matters.

Not suitable for

The maker does not describe this vest as flame-resistant. For hot, flammable work environments it sells separate Banox and Nomex vests, whose fabrics it states are Class 1 NFPA 70E rated, yet it warns that even with those, a cooling vest should not be relied on for protection where arc flash is possible. The packs must not be exposed to heated equipment or surroundings above 300 °F (about 149 °C).

01 · Fit

Straps set the size, the zip does the rest

Polar sells several pack vests: fitted fashion vests, a poncho style, strip-pack versions and flame-resistant models. This one pairs strap adjustment with 5–12 small packs.

Polar's fitted fashion vests have no external straps. This one is sized with hook-and-loop straps at the chest, waist and shoulders, so each size spans a wide range: 2XL/3XL, for example, fits chests and waists of 109–163 cm. The maker stresses a snug fit for effective cooling; once the straps are set, the vest goes on and off with the front zip. It carries no logo and can be worn over clothing or under a uniform.

  • Six sizes from XS/S to 2XL/3XL, for chest and waist 76–163 cm
  • 100% cotton twill in six colours, or two-ply nylon in navy that wipes clean
  • Fewer packs make it lighter, for example only those along the spine

02 · Pack options

Kool Max or Cool58: choosing the packs

Both pack types measure 4.5 × 6 in (about 11 × 15 cm) and fit the same insulated pockets. The “Home & Away” option adds a full set of each.

04 · How to use

Charging, loading and wearing the vest

Summarised from the maker's instruction leaflet and its product and industrial-worker pages.

  1. Two blue Kool Max packs and two white Cool58 packs side by side on a white background
    01

    Charge the packs

Lay Kool Max packs flat in a freezer until frozen hard (2–3 h) and keep them stored there. Lay Cool58 packs flat in ice water, a fridge or a freezer; they turn solid white when ready.

  2. Man on a white background wearing a blue cotton zip-front cooling vest with hook-and-loop straps across the chest and waist
    02

    Set the straps once

Put the vest on and adjust the hook-and-loop straps at the shoulders, chest and waist until it sits snugly. After that, the front zip is enough to put it on and take it off.

  3. Inside of the back panel of a black M/L vest with five Kool Max packs: two along the spine and three across the lower back
    03

    Load the pockets

Slide the packs into the insulated inner pockets: 5 to 12, depending on size. Not every pocket has to be filled; fewer packs, for example only along the spine, make the vest lighter.

  4. 04

Wear it over a fabric layer

Keep at least one layer of fabric between the skin and freezer-charged packs. The maker recommends wearing such products over clothing and adding or removing layers to adjust the cold.

  5. 05

    Swap packs during the shift

For site work, the maker suggests loading the vest before the shift and keeping charged spare packs in a cooler on site to rotate as needed.

  6. 06

    Clean and store

The leaflet says to hand wash cotton vests in cool water with mild detergent and hang them to dry, and to wipe nylon vests or hand wash them. Wipe the packs clean and store them in a freezer or a cool, dry place.

06 · Cautions

Arc flash, heat and pack handling: the maker's warnings

Warnings from the maker's product pages and instruction leaflet. The arc-flash warnings appear with its flame-resistant vests; this vest is not described as flame-resistant.

Our summary, then the maker's own words

  • Arc flash: the maker says that even its flame-resistant Banox and Nomex vests, whose fabrics it states are Class 1 NFPA 70E rated, should not be relied on for protection where arc flash is possible. This cotton or nylon vest is not presented as flame-resistant at all.

In the maker's words: Please note: while these fabrics are class 1 NFPA 70E rated, there is exposure to potential arc flash and the user should not depend on a cooling vest for protection. polarproducts.com

  • The same caution is repeated under safety and precautions on the Banox and Nomex product pages.

In the maker's words: Caution: If there is exposure to potential arc flash, the user should not depend on a cooling vest for protection. polarproducts.com

  • Heat sources: do not expose the packs to heated equipment or to surroundings hotter than 300 °F (about 149 °C).

In the maker's words: Do not expose cooling packs to heated equipment and/or environments exceeding 300°F. cdn.shopify.com

  • Skin protection: always keep an insulating layer between the pack and the skin. The vest pocket does this in most use, and extra pack covers are sold.

In the maker's words: Always use an insulation barrier between the cooling pack and your skin. polarproducts.com

  • Freezer-charged packs: wear the vest over clothing or other fabric layers. How much layering is needed varies from person to person and is the wearer's own responsibility.

In the maker's words: Polar Products recommends that all cooling products activated in a freezer be worn over clothing or other fabric layers to regulate the products’ cooling potential. cdn.shopify.com

  • Damaged Cool58 packs: stop using a pack that has burst or leaks. The contents are non-toxic but can cause a skin rash; the leaflet gives washing and first-aid steps.

In the maker's words: In case of pack rupture or leakage, discontinue use immediately. Although encapsulated material is non-toxic, it can cause a skin rash. cdn.shopify.com

  • Cooling times are estimates and change with climate, body metabolism and activity level.

In the maker's words: Please note: cooling times are estimates and will vary depending on climate, body metabolism, and activity level. polarproducts.com

  • Medical conditions: consult a healthcare provider before using cooling products for a medical condition.

In the maker's words: Consult your healthcare provider prior to using this or any cooling products for a medical condition. cdn.shopify.com

07 · FAQ

Questions the maker answers

How long does one set of packs keep cooling?

In pack-based vests, Kool Max packs cool for up to 3–4 hours and Cool58 packs for up to 2–3 hours. The maker stresses that these are estimates that depend on climate, metabolism and activity.

From the maker's site
Which pack type suits work in heat?

Where a freezer is available, the maker presents Kool Max as the main choice for high-heat industrial settings and long outdoor shifts. Cool58 needs no freezer, charges in ice water in about 15 minutes and holds about 58 °F (14.4 °C); workplace use is among the uses the maker lists for it.

From the maker's site
Does every pocket need a pack?

No. The instruction leaflet says not all packs have to be used: wearers choose how many and where, and some find a few packs on the back are enough.

From the maker's site
Can it be ordered from outside the United States?

Yes. International orders can be placed on the website, which shows an estimated shipping cost in the cart; the final charge may differ. Duties, taxes and customs fees are paid by the buyer, and delivery times are not guaranteed.

From the maker's site
What does the warranty cover?

Kool Max and Cool58 body cooling products carry a one-year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. Polar decides whether to repair or replace the item.

From the maker's site
Are bulk or government purchases possible?

Yes. The maker holds a US GSA contract and works with distributors and organisations on larger orders. For bulk orders it asks buyers to email for a quote and shipping and payment options.
