Cooling Vest

Arctic Heat · Australia

A light vest with gel pockets that you soak, freeze and wear to cool the chest and upper back in hot work.

A sleeveless polyester vest with pockets of polymer crystal across the chest and upper back. Soaked in water, the crystals swell into a gel that is frozen or chilled in ice water before wear; from the freezer it stays cold for up to 2 hours (maker's figure). It needs no battery or power and weighs 0.8–1 kg when activated.

Heat strain during extended work in high temperatures

Suitable for

Hot work where fans or air conditioning are impractical, such as construction, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, warehouses and enclosed or underground sites, including work in heavy PPE. The maker describes wearing it during shifts, before strenuous work, in scheduled breaks and afterwards, alongside water, rest and shade.

Not suitable for

The maker names no unsuitable sites. Its conditions of use: the vest does not replace a workplace heat-risk assessment or other controls; some medical conditions may call for a health professional's advice first; take extra care with elderly, disabled or ill wearers.

The maker's warnings (8)

01 · Activation

From dry crystals to a cold vest

The vest arrives with dry crystals in its pockets. They are soaked into gel once, and the vest is then chilled before each use (maker's instructions).

  1. 01

    Check the size while dry

Measure the chest and try the vest on before soaking it. Vest sizes differ from shirt sizes, and a size exchange is only accepted for a vest that has not been worn or soaked.

  2. 02

Soak until the pockets are firm

Submerge the vest in water for 5–15 minutes (the maker's pages give 5–10, 10 and 10–15 minutes). The crystals swell into gel; the pockets should be firm but not bursting.

  3. White and blue vests hanging on wooden hangers
    03

Wring, wipe and hang to dry

Twist gently to remove excess water and wipe inside and out with a towel; a little gel may seep out at first. Hang the vest until the fabric is completely dry.

  4. 04

    Chill it

Freeze for at least 2 hours, out of the plastic bag it came in, or chill it in ice water (see the table below). If the frozen pockets are stiff, bend them with your fingers to loosen them.

  5. 05

Wear it, then chill it again

The closer to the skin, the stronger the cooling. When the cold runs out, put the vest back in the freezer; let frozen-together fabric thaw rather than pulling it apart.

  6. 06

    Re-soak when the pockets flatten

Over time the gel dries and the pockets flatten; soak the vest again for 5–10 minutes. For long storage, let it dry back to crystals and hang it in a ventilated place.

02 · Chilling

Freezer, ice water, fridge or microwave

How long the vest stays cold depends on the air temperature and the wearer's body heat. The times below are the maker's guide.

  • Freezer

    How
At least 2 hours, not in the supplied plastic bag
    Stays cold
    Up to 2 hours
    Maker's notes
    Gives the longest continuous cooling
  • Ice-water slurry

    How
Soak the vest directly for 1–3 minutes, or put it in a resealable bag in the slurry
    Stays cold
Up to 30 minutes (direct soak)
    Maker's notes
    Towel-dry before wearing
  • Fridge

    How
    A short chill only
    Stays cold
    Not stated
    Maker's notes
Never store it in the fridge: mould may form
  • Microwave (warm use)

    How
30-second intervals until warm enough; times vary with wattage
    Stays cold
    Not stated
    Maker's notes
Check it is not too hot before wearing, to avoid burns

Two vests used in turn, one in the freezer while the other is worn, give up to 4 hours of continuous cooling (maker's figure for its blue-and-white pair).

03 · On site

Worn before, between and after hot work

Arctic Heat presents the vest as one part of a heat plan alongside water, rest, shade and scheduling, not a replacement for them. Because it needs no power, it can be used where fans or air conditioning are impractical. The maker describes wearing it during shifts, before strenuous work, in scheduled breaks and afterwards, and its photos show crews wearing it over work shirts.

  • Cooling is greatest against bare skin: up to 17 °C, compared with up to 13 °C over a light shirt (maker's figures).
  • The maker's articles name construction, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, warehouses and underground sites, including work in heavy PPE.
  • Blue or white only. No hi-vis model is in the current store; the maker's archived 2004–2007 pages offered safety yellow or orange, reflective strips and a fire-resistant version made to order.

04 · 17 °C claim

Where the 17 °C figure comes from

The figure matches a 2001 trial of an earlier version of the vest that Arctic Heat commissioned from CSIRO, Australia's national science agency. The best single readings were well above the averages.

  • Frozen overnight, on bare skin

    Best reading
    About 16–17 °C
    Average, 1st wear
    9.7 °C
    Average, 2nd wear
    6.4 °C
  • Frozen overnight, over a football jersey

    Best reading
    About 11–12 °C
    Average, 1st wear
    6.5 °C
    Average, 2nd wear
    3.8 °C
  • 5–10 minutes in ice water, on bare skin

    Best reading
    About 9 °C
    Average, 1st wear
    7.3 °C
    Average, 2nd wear
    5.5 °C
  • Jersey only, no vest

    Best reading
    –
    Average, 1st wear
    2.7 °C
    Average, 2nd wear
    2.5 °C

Drop in skin temperature under the vest. CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology, May 2001: 4 people jogged in the vest for 10 minutes at 25 °C and 50% relative humidity, then ran for 20 minutes without it, twice; probes on back, chest and abdomen. The vest then had four 30 mm gel pockets front and back. The report was on the maker's former website (archived copy, 2013).
