TWIG One

Twig Com · Finland

A belt-worn lone worker alarm with an SOS key, optional automatic man-down alerts and loud hands-free calls.

TWIG One is an 89.5 g alarm made in Finland by Twig Com for people working alone on noisy or hazardous industrial sites. Its SOS key, an optional man-down sensor or an expired Amber alert timer sends an alarm with the worker's position and opens a hands-free call. Alarms go to an alarm receiving centre, the maker's TWIG Point cloud service or a phone by SMS, over 2G/3G/4G or, with the right options, Wi-Fi.

Lone workers unable to call for help after a fall, injury or other emergency

Suitable for

Lone work in noisy and hazardous industrial settings; the maker names construction, maintenance and forestry. It locates by satellite outdoors and, with the SRD3 option plus beacons or Wi-Fi, inside buildings.

Not suitable for

Places where the device cannot reach its alarm receiver over the link it is set up to use: outside mobile coverage for cellular versions, or outside a configured 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network for Wi-Fi alerting (TLP53EU with SRD3 and firmware CT5P.02.010.000 or later; 5 GHz is not supported). Indoor positions need beacons or Wi-Fi, as satellite fixes are usually unavailable. Explosive atmospheres call for the ATEX-approved TWIG One Ex instead.

01 · Functions

Alarm functions built into the device

TWIG One pairs a manual SOS key with automatic alerts and a loud speakerphone. Several functions are device options chosen when ordering (maker's datasheet).

  • SOS key and SOS cycle

A raised SOS key starts the SOS cycle: the device calls through up to 10 preset numbers and sends its position. The key can be set to need a 1–5 s hold or a double press to limit accidental alarms.

  • Automatic man-down alarm

The optional man-down function watches device orientation, lack of movement, impact and free fall. Before the alarm goes out, a pre-alarm by tone, display and vibration lets the worker cancel it.

  • Amber alert check-in timer

Before a risky task the worker starts a timer with the yellow-marked key. If it is not reset in time, the device pre-alarms and then raises the alarm. In server-based mode the receiving centre escalates even if coverage is lost.

  • Loud hands-free speakerphone

A high-power speakerphone with two microphones carries two-way calls in noisy places, and a strong vibrator and alarm tones signal pre-alarms and incoming calls. Calls run over 2G, 3G or 4G (VoLTE), or as VoIP over Wi-Fi with the option.

  • Position outdoors and indoors

Satellite positioning combines GPS, GLONASS and Galileo, with assistance data from TWIG Point for faster fixes. With the SRD3 option, TWIG SRD beacons, Wi-Fi base stations or Bluetooth LE beacons locate the device indoors.

  • Remote set-up and NFC check-ins

Settings and firmware can be updated over the air through TWIG Point, or by USB with the TWIG Configurator PC app. An optional NFC reader logs attendance from tags, and TWIG SRD buttons and door sensors can be paired.

02 · Alarm flow

How an alarm travels from the belt to a responder

The device is one part of a system. Who receives the alarm, and how, depends on how the service provider sets it up.

  1. TWIG One held in one hand, with an industrial hall and crane hooks behind
    01

    The alarm is triggered

The worker presses the SOS key, or the device raises the alarm itself after a man-down trigger or an unanswered Amber alert timer. Automatic alarms are preceded by a pre-alarm that the worker can cancel.

  2. 02

A message with position is sent

The device sends a message giving the cause, its satellite or beacon position, speed, heading and battery level. It uses Twig Com's MPTP protocol by SMS or mobile data, or over Wi-Fi where configured.

  3. Monitoring centre operator with TWIG Point screens overlaid: device list, alarm location on a map and a site floor plan
    03

    The receiver takes the alarm

Depending on set-up, the alarm reaches an alarm receiving centre whose software supports MPTP, the TWIG Point Monitor cloud service with maps and floor plans, or a smartphone as an SMS with a map link.

  4. 04

    Voice contact until help arrives

A two-way hands-free call opens to the receiver. The operator can request a fresh position, send on-screen messages and call the device back from an authorised number.

04 · Man-down

Three levels of man-down detection

Twig Com describes three man-down levels. Tilt angle and motion sensitivity are set for each device to suit how and where it is worn.

Settings decide how reliable the alarm is. The maker advises matching them to the task and environment, training users on the function and its limits, and wearing the device as configured. Alarms can be loud or silent, the message states the cause, and a periodic beep can help responders find an unconscious person.

  • Man Down: tilted beyond the set angle and moving less than the set threshold.
  • Man Down+: movement below the threshold alone, for example fainting without a fall.
  • Man Down++: a sudden impact or a free fall.

07 · Cautions

Conditions and warnings from the maker

Our summaries of conditions in the maker's public documents, each with the maker's own wording.

Our summary, then the maker's own words

  • Communication depends on coverage. The datasheet limits it to mobile network coverage, and the Wi-Fi option only adds the Wi-Fi networks set up in the device. Check both at each work location.

In the maker's words: Communication is only possible within mobile network coverage. twigcom.com

  • Wi-Fi alerting works only on 2.4 GHz networks set up in the device (up to five); 5 GHz is not supported. If sending over Wi-Fi fails, messages go over the mobile network instead.

In the maker's words: Wi-Fi compatible TWIG personal alarm devices support only 2,4 GHz Wi-Fi network. twigcom.com

  • Satellite positions are generally not available inside buildings. Indoor location needs the SRD3 option plus TWIG SRD beacons, Wi-Fi base stations or BLE beacons on site.

In the maker's words: Lack of satellite connection and the requested accuracy of indoor location require a different solution for indoor positioning. twigcom.com

  • Man-down settings must suit the task and environment to avoid both false and missed alarms, and users need training on the function and its limits.

In the maker's words: In order to minimize false alarms or missing alarms, the mandown settings need to be carefully matched with the usage scenario and environment. twigcom.com

  • Wear the device in the position its man-down settings assume; another position can cause false or missed alarms.

In the maker's words: Incorrect wearing positions can lead to false alarms or missed detections, compromising the safety of the lone worker. twigcom.com

  • The standard TWIG One's datasheet lists no ATEX approval. For explosive atmospheres the maker offers the ATEX- and IECEx-approved TWIG One Ex.

In the maker's words: Hazardous environments with explosive atmospheres require use of ATEX devices enabling safe operation where standard devices may pose ignition risks. twigcom.com

  • Charge only between 0 and 45 °C, even though the device operates from −20 to 50 °C.

In the maker's words: Charging only above 0°C and below +45°C. twigcom.com

  • Battery figures are typical values: 9 days assumes one report an hour, and frequent tracking cuts this to hours. Plan charging around the reporting interval actually set.

In the maker's words: Operating times may vary substantially depending on environment. twigcom.com

  • Correct behaviour depends on the service around the device. The maker's BS 8484 declaration holds only with a compliant lone worker service, and the service supplier must deploy the right settings.

In the maker's words: TWIG devices are configurable to a wide variety of applications and use cases, and it is critical that the right settings are deployed by the LWS supplier. twigcom.com

  • The TWIG Point cloud service targets 99.95 % monthly uptime, but its service level agreement says it is not built to be error-free or uninterrupted. Support runs 9:00–15:00 Finnish time.

In the maker's words: the Service is not designed to be error-free or uninterrupted twigcom.com
